Safety tip

The safest place to be when outdoors during a lightning storm is in a car with a metal roof, according to Melissa Heckscher, author of  Be Safe. Roughly 400 people are struck by lightning each year in the United States. Cars are safe havens because electrical currents in lightning travel over the outside of the car rather than through them.

Contrary to popular wisdom, car tires do not absorb the electric shock. It s the cage of metal around you that protects.

Looks aren t everything, they say, but they apparently count for something, as in 10 million. That s how many cosmetic procedures, from Botox injections to laser hair removal, were conducted in the United States last year.

The number is up 11 percent from 2004 and a whopping 38 percent from 2000, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The vast majority of recipients were female, white and middle-aged, though 1 million men had cosmetic procedures last year, as did 300,000 youths 18 and younger.

Botox injections topped the list at 3.8 million, followed by chemical peels (1.03 million), microdermabrasion (837,711), laser hair removal (782,732) and sclerotherapy (which includes injectable wrinkle fillers) at 589,768.

The top five cosmetic surgeries were liposuction (323,605), nose reshaping (298,413), breast augmentation (291,350), eyelid surgery (230,697) and tummy tucks (134,746).

The most common male cosmetic procedures were nose reshaping, hair transplantation, eyelid surgery and breast reduction. For the youngest patients, nose jobs were most popular.
