The women got together to hear about the latest miracles in beauty, including a very hot, new-generation, age-fighting laser.

Laser?

Forget about a fountain of youth. Think ray-gun of youth.

The 100 or so women didn't seem to blink at the thought of a gadget that shoots thousands of microscopic beams deep into their skin.

If it can smooth wrinkles and remove splotches . . . .... Zap, already.

Because, what a drag it is still, getting old...

At SK Sanctuary, an upscale spa in La Jolla, they can give back years to those who are willing to undergo treatment with an instrument that's associated with, among other things, burning holes through bank vaults.

If not, injectable body fillers are an option too.

Women today hold top-notch jobs, run sub four-hour marathons, graduate from college in higher numbers than men, even win NCAA basketball pools. Yet regardless of such accomplishments, few can escape the grasp of the mirror.

On this recent night, for this moment at least, the women attending the spa's a  Night of Beauty were looking anywhere but inward for their latest goals.

They wanted to look fine.

They wanted to turn back the clock.

They wanted to turn heads.

In 2005, more than 10 million plastic surgery procedures were done  an increase of 11 percent over the previous year. Nearly 90 percent of the patients were women although greater numbers of men are also searching for youth.

If that laser thing could grow hair, for instance, look out: men would swarm the place. So many lasers would be going off that it would look like a Star Wars battle scene.

The smooth-skinned nurse who explained the new laser procedure for skin rejuvenation made it sound positively appealing, especially when compared with a more familiar alternative  injectable fillers like Botox that are shot into the forehead to erase wrinkles.

One common side effect of the fillers: temporary eyelid droop. With the laser, the worst that might happen is a face that turns bronze for a bit.

The women say the alternative to such treatments is even more harsh: aging in an era that oozes youth and beauty and sex appeal. Look at movies, magazines, TV shows, those perky, pretty, perfect news anchors.

So here they fight back, but in style, mind you. This event unfolded like a cocktail party, stocked with wine, cheese and micropigmentation.

Lee Posnock has twice had the Fraxel Laser Treatment, which costs $1,000 a pop and is among the latest tools on the market to battle the clock.

Posnock is 44 and looks years younger.

Her face is as smooth and wholesome as the women who used to plug Ivory soap, which, of course, you won't find here.

 There's a lot of pressure on women today to look good, said Posnock, a mother of four.

Money didn't seem to be much an issue at the spa, which boasts, among other things, 12 treatment rooms, a pedicure room and a landscaped terrace. The women attending looked smart, elegant and well-off. They were toned and fashionably dressed.

None of them looked, well, old. They seemed in the prime of their lives, ready to tackle a demanding work project or  possibly  a 2-year-old grandson.

Or swim the English Channel. Both ways.

Anne Cleveland once managed that feat, but now she is on a different quest, a quest to look younger.

Because, why not?

 We all want to find ways to look better, said Cleveland, who is 50.

The sun and the sea damaged her skin. So fire up the laser.

Looking good is important to just about every woman, she pointed out. Don't buy it for a second if someone says differently.

 The bottom line, it is.
